Yes! South Africa’s Faith Communities Must Wake Up Now, lets unpack it.
The CRL Rights Commission is once again trying to bring religion under State control. This time, they’re couching it in the words “Peer Review.”
But don’t be fooled. This is not about helping you the faith community. It is about control. If the plan goes ahead, no church, mosque, synagogue, or religious leader in South Africa will be free from government oversight.
The CRL Chair said earlier this year:
“You want to open up a church… you apply first. We test you… and grant a licence.”
This is the future they are pushing for.
Is it a future you want for your ministry or church community?
4 Reasons why This Is So Dangerous
No 1. It is Unconstitutional
Our Constitution protects freedom of religion, freedom of association and the right of faith communities to govern themselves. Forcing religious leaders into State-controlled structures strips away those rights.
No 2. It is Unnecessary
South Africa already has strong laws that cover abuse and criminal behaviour.
The Criminal Law, SORMA and the Children’s Act already deal with these issues. The problem is not that we lack laws, it’s that existing laws are not properly enforced.
No 3. It is Unworkable
Who decides what counts as a “religion”? Who decides who may preach? What happens if a church refuses to submit to a State-controlled committee?
These questions cannot be answered fairly…
No 4. It is Unaffordable
The plan could cost R750 million to start and R250 million every year to run! Yes you read that correctly. Millions upon millions!
The CRL does not have this money, so faith communities would be forced to pay licensing fees. In the end, YOU the ordinary believers will carry the cost.
The Real Danger
The CRL has already set up a Section 22 Committee to prepare the ground for this “Peer Review” Council. Its job is to collect evidence, frame religious communities as “out of control,” and convince Parliament to pass new laws.
If this happens, the State will decide who may preach, who may lead and which organisations may exist. This would fundamentally change the relationship between YOU the church and the State.
It is not just a matter of administration. It is the government taking over the pulpit.
A Better Way Forward
We do not need State-controlled religion!
Instead, religious communities can:
1. Strengthen your own voluntary networks and fraternals.
2. Use the Religious Freedom Charter and Codes of Conduct. (Visit the link below to download.)
4. Educate yourself and provide proper training for leaders in your church based on the informaqtion found on the FOR SA website. (Visit the link below to view.)
5. Support organisations like FOR SA, who are actively defending freedom of religion.
6. NB! Get your Church to sign the Anti Regulation Declaration! (Visit the link below and find it under ‘SOLUTIONS’ on the FOR SA Website)
7. Attend and Speak Up at the Section 22 Committee hearings.
NB! Download the information from the link below.
The tools are already in our hands. What we need is accountability within our communities, not government interference.
Final Word
The CRL says, “It’s not business as usual.” And they are right.
If this plan goes ahead, your right to preach, worship and serve will no longer be decided by God’s call – it will be decided by a government committee.
History shows that when the State regulates religion, freedom dies.
As Bishop Zipho Siwa warns:
“In whatever ‘self-regulatory’ terms this is couched, these regulatory bodies will be state-appointed, state-funded and state-controlled.”
The time to act is NOW!
Speak up. Stand for your freedom – before it is too late.
